Partners for 23 years, Myles & Tessa have dominated the Showcase division and compete at the highest level in improvised competition. They also teach workshops, train teachers, judge and perform on the global circuit.
Tessa has been professionally practicing physical education, movement analysis, and pedagogy for the past 30 years, in the context of multiple sports and dance styles, with degrees in both Kinesiology and Education.

This was a surprisingly charming theme with doable "get out of your comfort zone" projects. I feel like I've been freed from my own shackles, with a deeper understanding of nervousness (aka fear!). Embracing "it will never be perfect/finished", I am claiming the win of completing the theme and posting my final project!
End of month reflections
1, I am amazed at how my dancing has changed with just feeling confidence within.
2, I was surprised that I can train myself to be more confident by using all sorts of resources and tactics.
3, I am happy to see my final video with more confidence: standing proud, looking at audience (camera), smiling, owning & selling my movements (bigger and more intentional movements)…
Confidence was a theme that really spoke to me: 'if you don't want to, it means you need it'.
It has also helped me outside the dance floor, awesome.
But ultimately, the real proof of my improved confidence is posting my videos to finish the theme, because I kept putting that off because I wasn't happy with the vids.
We did a flashmob tour through the city, this is the one where I started solo while on both sides people were watching from the adjacent terraces. Not only did I easily agree to start this one, I even enjoyed it! Major breakthrough for me.
Today I had the pleasure of practicing with Susan for the first time. I have always found her a little intimidating - she is such a beautiful and dedicated dancer, and much more technically skilled than I am. As such I figured this was a good test for the Automating Confidence assignment of reflecting on a recent social dance.
First of all, let me say Susan is very kind and welcoming and immediately put me at ease. Even so, I think my reaction today was much different than it would have been pre-Momentum. I felt much calmer and more confident in my ability to at least provide a solid foundation, even if I couldn't do all the fancy stylings or hit every break. That's a big change for me. As we worked out the kinks in learning to practice together, I wasn't really beating myself up over it, or blaming myself for being a bad dancer, which again is a big deal. I had confidence we would figure it out… and we did!
This is an insanely important module and so highly interesting. I couldn't stop reading through it carefully, listening closely to every video, audio and diligently taking notes. Already, something incredible happened.
A higher level leader suggested I dance in Open Strictly with an Intermediate leader even though I am an absolute beginner in competition. Instead of my usual panic, I rose to the challenge and responded to a leader's post who was searching for a partner... and we danced and had a great time!
Reflection: This module has changed my complete attitude, it has taken away my fear of fear. Now a new adventure begins and I let myself go for it.
I am so overwhelmed how easy it was to finally jump over my shadow that I wanted to share my experience with you.
Reflections: In comparing my before and after videos, I can definitely see differences that convey different levels of confidence. This theme has made me reflect on the effects that negative self-talk has my (and others’) behaviors, and how positive self-talk can have the opposite effects (feeling happier, more confident, less frustrated). To my surprise, the very moves that feel silly, or “too much,” have earned me big compliments from my dance partner! As I am encouraging myself to be nicer to myself, I am also finding that I’m doing the same with others- family, friends, and colleagues. Thank you, Myles and Tessa, for the work you put into this theme, which has been surprisingly influential on my thoughts and behaviors.
